Description

Tour description of the Marathon and Artemida half day private tour

Greece tours private chauffeur will drive you to Marathon,  to see the starting point of its  long-distance foot race with an official distance of 42,195 kilometers (26 miles 385 yards) that is usually run as a road race. The event is named after the fabled run of the Greek soldier Pheidippides or (Efklis), a messenger from the Battle of Marathon to Athens. Visit the archaeological site, the museum, the tom of  the thespian with its graves, the tom of the Athenians.

Some of the history here:  historical accuracy of this legend is in doubt, contradicted by accounts given by Herodotus, in particular. Marathon was one of the original modern Olympic events in 1896, though the distance did not become standardized until 1921. More than 800 marathons are contested throughout the world each year, with the vast majority of competitors being recreational athletes. Larger marathons can have tens of thousands of participants. The dictionary: the Battle of Marathon (Greek: Μάχη τοῡ Μαραθῶνος, Machē tou Marathōnos) during the Greco-Persian Wars took place in 490 BC and was the culmination of the first attempt by the Achaemenid Empire of Persia, under King Darius I, to subjugate Greece.

Your Splendid private tour continue with  your private chauffeur to Artemida famous for its Temple of Artemis in Vravrona (Goddess of handing) from the 6th century BC, the new museum with artifacts from the area and  its beach stretching over most of the east coast except for some parts, as well as for hotels, bars, restaurants and local taverns.

Get to know…

…Vravrona or Brauron (modern Vraona), in east Attica, one of the twelve ancient Attic townships traditionally united by Theseus into a single Athenian state. It was well known from ancient times for the worship of Artemis, who had an important temple there and in whose honour a festival, Braurōnia, was held annually. This was celebrated with particular splendor every fourth year.

Artemis the goddess: Artemis was a very power full and great leader and protector.

Back in Athens the goddess Athena was more honored than Artemis. Artemis’ legs and body was enclosed within a tapering temple like term from which her feet extended. On ephesian coins she rests either arm on a staff formed and entwined with serpents or a stack of ouroboroi, the eternal serpent with its tail in its mouth. Artemis was the goddess of hunting and wilderness/nature. She was also a goddess of childbirth, and the protectiveness of the girl child up to the age of marriage. Her twin brother Apollon was similarly the protector of the boy child. Together the two gods were also bringers of sudden death and disease. Artemis targeted women and girls, and Apollon men and boys. In ancient art Artemis was usually depicted as a girl dressed in a short knee-length chiton and equipped with a hunting bow and quiver of arrows. When Zeus asked Artemis what presents she wanted for her third birthday she responded without hesitation that she wanted six things: to be allowed to live without having to be distracted by love and marriage,a bow and arrow just like her brother’s, a hunting costume and freedom from having to dress up like a lady, the job of bringing light into the world, sixty young nymphs to be her companions and to help care for her hunting dogs, and all the mountains on the earth to live on.
Artemis in conclusion, could be both destructive and kind, she was one of the major Greek goddesses, and she is known as a fierce hunter as well as a protector.
